The first portion of your semi-annual appointment will be your dental checkup. Once you get comfortable in our treatment room, we’ll examine your teeth and gums, looking for any signs of oral health problems or plaque and tartar buildup. Using special tools, we’ll measure the depth of your gums and keep an eye out for common periodontal disease symptoms such as irritation, swelling, and redness.
If it has been awhile since you last had a dental X-ray, we’ll also take images of your mouth and facial structure to see if there are any problems hidden beneath the surface. This is a great time for you to let us know if you’ve been experiencing any out-of-the-ordinary symptoms. If you have an oral health problem, we’ll develop a treatment plan with you before we move onto the cleaning portion of your visit.
After any lingering oral health problems have been addressed, one of our experienced dental hygienists will begin your professional dental cleaning. Using gadgets that are specially designed to reach into the nooks and crannies of your mouth, such as the scaler, we’ll remove all of the plaque and tartar from below your gum line. This will keep harmful oral bacteria from building up and causing cavities.
Using a gritty substance called prophylaxis paste, we’ll polish your teeth with a powered polisher to break apart any surface stains and leave your smile brighter than when you walked into our office. Lastly, we’ll floss between each of your teeth to make sure they’re clear of any food debris and plaque.
Preventive dental care doesn’t just keep your mouth healthy, it also offers several benefits for your overall wellbeing. Here are seven reasons to visit your dentist for checkups and cleanings every six months:

During your checkups and cleanings, we’re able to reach into the nooks and crannies of your mouth that you can’t get to at home. However, with the proper daily oral hygiene routine, you can shorten your dental visits and keep your teeth bright and healthy. Here’s what you can do between checkups and cleanings:
