Don’t Know What CEREC Crowns Are? These 3 Facts Will Break the Ice

“What in the world is a CEREC?” You might be wondering. It’s a fair question – CEREC machines are a relatively new dental innovation. In short, CEREC’s full name is “chairside restoration of esthetic ceramics”, and its day-job is to design and mill dental crowns in one day. But that just scratches the surface of this advanced technology! If you’d like to get to know CEREC crowns better, keep reading. These three facts will help break the ice.

#1. CEREC Makes Same-Day, Single-Visit Dental Crowns

What does “same-day” and “single-visit” mean, exactly? Normally when you visit your dentist for a dental crown, they’ll examine your affected tooth and design a fitting restoration for it on your first appointment. Then you’ll head home and wait for a lab to physically craft the crown, which means seeing your dentist for a second appointment to get it placed.

With a CEREC machine, your dentist can design your crown, mill it in-office, and place it on your tooth all on the same day, during the same visit! All told, the process can take as little as two hours to complete.

#2. A Faster Process Doesn’t Mean Poorer Quality

“Haste makes waste” is something that many children are told growing up. For the most part, this proverb holds water. Just not in the case of CEREC crowns! When your crown technician prepares your restoration for milling, they’ll use the same durable and aesthetic porcelain as tooth-colored crowns on “normal speed”. You’ll be able to take care of a CEREC crown the same way you would a traditional one, too. No extra maintenance needed.

#3. Immediate Restoration Offers More Comfort

Thanks to CEREC’s advanced cameras, same-day crowns can be crafted with incredible precision. This ensures a comfortable, snug fit for your tooth, and the single-visit process has one other advantage: it eliminates the need for a temporary crown.

Since your tooth is at risk of further damage without a protective cap, dentists supply patients with a temporary crown while they wait for the lab to finish the permanent version. In other words, you’ll have to experience placement discomfort and soreness twice. With CEREC, you can cut down on the number of days you’ll be taking ibuprofen or Tylenol.

Interested? Many patients are. The person who knows CEREC the best, though, is your dentist. If you want to experience same-day dental crowns for yourself, give them a call. They’ll be happy to introduce you!
